Implementazione di entrambi i requisiti, uno o l'altro, ma non nullo in un database

Risposta di Ypercube va bene, tranne per il fatto che ciò può, in effetti, essere eseguito esclusivamente tramite l'integrità dichiarativa mantenendo tabelle separate. Il trucco è combinare chiavi ESTERE circolari differite con un po' di denormalizzazione creativa:

ALTER TABLE Instruction ADD FOREIGN KEY (DocumentId) REFERENCES Document DEFERRABLE INITIALLY DEFERRED;

L'inserimento del testo avviene in questo modo:

INSERT INTO Instruction (InstructionId, TextId) VALUES (1, 1);
INSERT INTO Text (InstructionId) VALUES (1);
COMMIT;

Inserimento di un documento in questo modo:

INSERT INTO Instruction (InstructionId, DocumentId) VALUES (2, 2);
INSERT INTO Document (InstructionId) VALUES (2);
COMMIT;

E inserendo sia il testo che il documento in questo modo:

INSERT INTO Instruction (InstructionId, TextId, DocumentId) VALUES (3, 3, 3);
INSERT INTO Text (InstructionId) VALUES (3);
INSERT INTO Document (InstructionId) VALUES (3);
COMMIT;

Tuttavia, il tentativo di inserire l'istruzione da solo non riesce su commit:

INSERT INTO Instruction (InstructionId, TextId) VALUES (4, 4);
COMMIT; -- Error (FOREIGN KEY violation).

Anche il tentativo di inserire il "tipo non corrispondente" non riesce su commit:

INSERT INTO Document (InstructionId) VALUES (1);
COMMIT; -- Error (FOREIGN KEY violation).

E, naturalmente, il tentativo di inserire valori errati nell'istruzione non riesce (questa volta prima del commit):

INSERT INTO Instruction (InstructionId, TextId) VALUES (5, 6); -- Error (CHECK violation).
INSERT INTO Instruction (InstructionId) VALUES (7); -- Error (CHECK violation).
